N\u00e4r Daniel White var 23 \u00e5r gammal hade han i princip best\u00e4mt sig. Han tittade p\u00e5 l\u00e4genheter, s\u00f6kte nya jobb och planerade f\u00f6r ett liv utanf\u00f6r Plymouthbr\u00f6derna, den kristna kyrka d\u00e4r han vuxit upp.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag hade problem med ekonomin, trivdes inte med mitt liv och s\u00e5g egentligen ingen v\u00e4g fram\u00e5t, ber\u00e4ttar han.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I dag, femton \u00e5r senare, \u00e4r han gift, har tv\u00e5 barn och \u00e4r fortfarande aktiv i kyrkan. N\u00e4r han ser tillbaka p\u00e5 den period d\u00e5 han \u00f6verv\u00e4gde att l\u00e4mna allt bakom sig beskriver han en ov\u00e4ntad flytt till Skottland som en avg\u00f6rande v\u00e4ndpunkt.<\/p>\n

Daniel v\u00e4xte upp i Nordirland, men under de tidiga vuxen\u00e5ren hamnade han i en situation d\u00e4r allt fler delar av livet k\u00e4ndes problematiska.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag visste att jag ville leva i linje med min tro, men det gjorde jag inte. Det skapade en konflikt inom mig som blev sv\u00e5r att hantera.<\/p>\n

Tankarna p\u00e5 att l\u00e4mna kyrkan v\u00e4xte med tiden till n\u00e5got mer \u00e4n bara tillf\u00e4lliga funderingar.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag tittade p\u00e5 l\u00e4genheter och gick p\u00e5 jobbintervjuer. Jag var beredd att b\u00f6rja om fr\u00e5n b\u00f6rjan och skapa ett helt nytt liv.<\/p>\n

Samtidigt fanns det en k\u00e4nsla av att det inte var det han egentligen ville.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Innerst inne visste jag att jag inte ville l\u00e4mna kyrkan. Men jag hade m\u00e5lat in mig i ett h\u00f6rn och kunde inte se n\u00e5gon annan utv\u00e4g.<\/p>\n

Ett telefonsamtal fr\u00e5n Skottland<\/strong><\/p>\n

V\u00e4ndpunkten kom n\u00e4r han fick ett erbjudande om att jobba i skotska Edinburgh under tre m\u00e5nader. Jobbet l\u00e5g inom samma bransch som han redan arbetade i och innebar en chans att b\u00f6rja om p\u00e5 en helt ny plats.<\/p>\n

Samtidigt kom ytterligare ett ov\u00e4ntat erbjudande. Ett \u00e4ldre par inom kyrkan ringde och fr\u00e5gade om han ville bo hos dem under tiden.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Vi k\u00e4nde inte varandra \u00f6ver huvud taget. De ringde mitt i veckan och tv\u00e5 dagar senare hade jag flyttat in hos dem.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag minns att jag t\u00e4nkte att det h\u00e4r nog skulle bli ganska tr\u00e5kigt. De var i 60-\u00e5rs\u00e5ldern och jag var 23. Men jag t\u00e4nkte att det bara var tre m\u00e5nader och att jag kunde \u00e5ka hem igen om det inte fungerade.<\/p>\n

Blev en del av familjen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Det \u00e4ldre paret tog emot honom som om han vore en del av familjen.<\/p>\n

\u2013 De hade vuxna barn och barnbarn, men de tog in mig i gemenskapen direkt. Jag blev en del av vardagen och l\u00e4rde k\u00e4nna hela familjen.<\/p>\n

Tiden i Skottland kom att fyllas med betydligt mer \u00e4n arbete.<\/p>\n

De gjorde utflykter tillsammans, \u00e4gnade timmar \u00e5t att spana efter de skygga r\u00f6da ekorrarna som finns i de skotska skogarna, och tillbringade mycket tid med familj och v\u00e4nner.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Vi skaffade till och med en papegoja som vi l\u00e4rde att vissla och dansa.<\/p>\n

Men det var inte aktiviteterna som skulle f\u00e5 st\u00f6rst betydelse.<\/p>\n

F\u00f6rebilder i st\u00e4llet f\u00f6r pekpinnar<\/strong><\/p>\n

N\u00e4r Daniel ber\u00e4ttar om tiden i Skottland \u00e5terkommer han ofta till en sak: ingen f\u00f6rs\u00f6kte tvinga honom att t\u00e4nka eller leva p\u00e5 ett visst s\u00e4tt.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Ingen satte mig framf\u00f6r en bibel och sa att jag skulle l\u00e4sa. Ingen talade om f\u00f6r mig vad jag skulle g\u00f6ra.<\/p>\n

I st\u00e4llet fick han m\u00f6jlighet att st\u00e4lla fr\u00e5gor och diskutera s\u00e5dant han funderat p\u00e5 under flera \u00e5r.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag hade m\u00e5nga fr\u00e5gor om b\u00e5de tro och livet i stort. Jag m\u00f6ttes av t\u00e5lamod och m\u00e4nniskor som tog sig tid att lyssna.<\/p>\n

Det som p\u00e5verkade honom mest var dock att se hur andra levde.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag s\u00e5g hur m\u00e4nniskor behandlade varandra. Jag s\u00e5g hur det \u00e4ldre paret tog emot m\u00e4nniskor i sitt hem och hur de brydde sig om andra. M\u00e5nga unga ville vara d\u00e4r och umg\u00e5s. Jag tror att jag b\u00f6rjade inse att jag sj\u00e4lv ville leva mer som dem.<\/p>\n

Fr\u00e5n problem till <\/strong>framtidsplaner<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under tiden i Edinburgh fick Daniel ocks\u00e5 hj\u00e4lp att b\u00f6rja t\u00e4nka mer l\u00e5ngsiktigt. Han ville kunna k\u00f6pa ett hus och bilda familj, men hade sv\u00e5rt att se hur det skulle g\u00e5 till.<\/p>\n

Flera personer i den lokala gemenskapen hj\u00e4lpte honom att s\u00e4tta upp konkreta m\u00e5l f\u00f6r ekonomi och sparande.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Vi gjorde upp en plan utifr\u00e5n vad jag tj\u00e4nade och vad som faktiskt var m\u00f6jligt. F\u00f6r f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen hade jag m\u00e5l f\u00f6r framtiden som k\u00e4ndes realistiska.<\/p>\n

Genom h\u00e5rt arbete och n\u00e5gra framg\u00e5ngsrika \u00e5r i arbetslivet n\u00e5dde han m\u00e5len snabbare \u00e4n han sj\u00e4lv hade trott.<\/p>\n

Femton \u00e5r senare<\/strong><\/p>\n

I dag bor Daniel i USA tillsammans med sin fru och deras tv\u00e5 barn. Han engagerar sig i skolaktiviteter, lokala projekt och olika delar av f\u00f6rsamlingslivet.<\/p>\n

N\u00e4r han ser tillbaka p\u00e5 den period d\u00e5 han funderade p\u00e5 att l\u00e4mna kyrkan beskriver han beslutet att stanna kvar som avg\u00f6rande.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jag hade aldrig kunnat f\u00f6rest\u00e4lla mig hur livet skulle se ut i dag. Det har varit femton \u00e5r fyllda av m\u00f6jligheter och v\u00e4lsignelser som jag inte s\u00e5g som m\u00f6jliga d\u00e5.<\/p>\n

F\u00f6r Daniel blev flytten till Skottland b\u00f6rjan p\u00e5 ett nytt kapitel i livet. Men framf\u00f6r allt blev den en p\u00e5minnelse om vilken skillnad m\u00e4nniskor kan g\u00f6ra f\u00f6r varandra.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Det viktigaste \u00e4r m\u00e4nniskorna som hj\u00e4lpte mig n\u00e4r jag beh\u00f6vde det som mest. Jag kommer aldrig att gl\u00f6mma det.<\/p>\n
