Learn more about technology and entertainment within the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC).
Early on, the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church was mindful of technological advances because of the potential moral and physical risk they could pose. But, over time, our Church and our members have adapted. The Plymouth Brethren do use technology in all aspects of our lives – including in education, business, and in the practice of our faith – with appropriate safeguards in place.
For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, our Church held services online via Zoom, allowing families to gather around screens for daily worship. This allowed us to maintain our focus on spiritual matters, even in the face of restrictions. That said, we still prefer to spend time together in person. Like everyone in the wider community, we were grateful when COVID restrictions lifted, and since we then have been using a hybrid of both in person and remote services.
Concerns about the potential risks of internet and social media use are widely held across society and are not exclusive to members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. But with appropriate filtering technology, and individual discernment, we have adapted and now find technology adds value to our lives, improving efficiencies and supporting communication. Members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church do use computers, laptops and smartphones in our day to day lives, at school, work and in our homes – much like anyone else – but we do prefer to limit screentime at home.
Members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church purposefully choose to stay away from influences which could distract from the teachings of Christ. Television as entertainment can be categorised as one such influence. Some use of television for educational purposes may occur but generally Brethren do not watch TV. That said, some of us do watch the news or enjoy factual documentaries on the computer – depending on personal preference.
Unlike the internet, where filtering software can be used, television offers less control over what is viewed. This makes it more challenging to avoid content that may be harmful.
We do enjoy music, and it is a significant part of our lives. In fact, many members of our community are skilled singers and musicians.
If you speak to any member of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, they will probably tell you how busy their schedule is! We prioritise our worship, our work, education, charity or volunteering, and spending time with family and friends. We put a lot of time, energy and effort into entertaining our family and friends at our homes and making those times together enjoyable. We come together every day as a community in Gospel Halls, and every Sunday we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, which you may know as Holy Communion.
