BURGERS FOR HUNGRY STAFF AT THE ALFRED

The seemingly endless hours medical staff spend toiling on the frontline often go by without receiving the appreciation they deserve.

So, when the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) charity turned up at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with 2,000 signature burgers and bottles of water, there were hundreds of takers who were grateful for the offer.

“We just wanted to say to the doctors and nurses and all of the other fantastic hospital workers at The Alfred who help us in times of distress and crisis and emergency – you really are the heroes of Melbourne,” said RRT Operations Manager, Mick Dunn.

And there were plenty of satisfied smiles on the day as hungry workers enjoyed lunch in the relaxed atmosphere of The Alfred’s courtyard where just for a short time, they were able to leave the stress of work behind.

“There were plenty of happy workers who seemed to really appreciate the efforts of our volunteers,” Mr Dunn said.

“This is what community spirit is about – providing an opportunity to give back, and recognise those who work so hard to keep their neighbours safe and healthy.”

The Alfred is the busiest medical trauma centre in Australia. In 2021-22, The Alfred managed more than 12,000 emergency and resuscitation patients and provides specialised care for Victoria’s most complex patients.

It has the state’s largest ICU and the state’s only heart and lung transplant service, as well as the Victorian Adults Burn Service and the Victorian Melanoma Centre.

In 2022 RRT volunteers across the globe have served more than 240, 000 event meals, and over 1.6 million Food Box meals to people in need, including those in war and disaster zones.
