PBCC volunteers recognise the heartbeat of healthcare across the globe

For those who spend their lives caring for others, May became a month dedicated to giving something back.

This year, Plymouth Brethren Christian Church volunteers with the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) commemorated International Nurses Day 2026 with one united purpose; to recognise, encourage and uplift the nurses, midwives and hospital staff who work tirelessly every day to care for our communities.

From bustling city hospitals to regional healthcare centres, RRT volunteers served more than 52,000 meals across over 100 events in nine countries, creating moments of appreciation for the people who so often put others before themselves.

Throughout May, RRT volunteers from Australia, New Zealand, North America, the Caribbean, Argentina, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany transformed hospital entrances, courtyards and staff break areas into welcoming spaces filled with hot meals, fresh coffee and heartfelt gratitude.

It was a global recognition driven by one simple message: thank you.

International Nurses Day 2026 by the Numbers…

  • 52,000 moments of joy provided.
  • 100 hospital and healthcare events supported.
  • 10 countries involved.
  • 1 united global mission of care and compassion.

The 2026 International Nurses Day theme, “Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” resonated deeply with RRT volunteers around the world. Many of these events hit close to home, with volunteers recognising the nurses and hospital staff who had cared for their own families through their own life-changing moments. It made every meal served a genuine thank you.

Laughter echoed through hospital courtyards, coffee cups were shared between shifts, conversations sparked between volunteers and healthcare workers. And for a few moments, nurses and hospital staff were reminded that entire communities stand behind them with appreciation.

RRT’s International Nurses Day support continues to grow each year, reflecting the organisation’s ongoing commitment to serving communities through practical care and compassion.

The Rapid Relief Team is the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. Established in 2013, RRT has more than 16,500 volunteers across the globe who support community events and assist emergency services during times of disaster and crisis through the provision of meals, refreshments and practical support.
